Officially inaugurated on 22 November 2018, OSCAR, the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research, is the University of Oxford’s first and only engineering and physical sciences research institute located in China.

OSCAR is situated in the Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu Province, China. The Centre occupies a nine-storey building with a gross space of 20,000 square metres，offering flexible access to facilities for multi-functional activities including experiments, seminars, workshops, training, and public events. It houses over 30 high-quality, specialised laboratories, totalling approximately 7,500 square metres.

OSCAR builds on Oxford University’s research strength and leads research in modern biotechnology, advanced materials, computational approaches and manufacturing techniques to provide innovative solutions to current global healthcare, energy, environmental and financial challenges.

OSCAR’s mission is to create a long-term international collaboration between the UK and China, combining academic research, technological development, and commercial exploitation via a mutually beneficial partnership with Suzhou Industrial Park’s expert manufacturing base, to bring innovative technologies of global benefit to market.

OSCAR will conduct internationally leading research and development, accelerate the commercial adoption of new technologies, foster interactions between academia and industry, nurture next generation researchers and promote international research co-operation for the benefit of local, regional, national, and international societies.

Professor Zhanfeng Cui, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering，Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Donald Pollock Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Oxford is appointed as the Director of OSCAR.

Fourteen established professors from the University of Oxford’s MPLS Division spearhead OSCAR’s research initiatives undertaken by the world’s brightest minds in research and development. The appointment of eminent international academics as Visiting Academicians and Professors adds to OSCAR’s already outstanding expertise and research.
